Welcome to Year 6
Here are a few notes to let you know about life in Rowan and Sycamore Class:
This is a reminder of routines and procedures that will help your child to be ready and prepared for each day.
The door to the classroom opens at 8:40 every morning. When your child arrives s/he will be expected to put their things away and begin morning work. At the end of the day they should be collected from the playground at 3:15 unless you have provided written permission for them to walk home alone.
• Red Abbotsbury jumper/cardigan (with logo)
• White polo shirt
• Black or grey trousers/skirt
• Plain grey/red tights
• Plain grey/white/black socks
• Plain black shoes/trainers
Please ensure that your child brings the following to school EVERYDAY:
1. Book bag
2. Water bottle
3. Home/school diary
4. Reading journal
5. Guided reading book
The water bottle, clearly labelled with your child’s name, is kept in the classroom (a separate drink for packed lunch would be ideal). The children may bring juice for packed lunch but water only for the classroom please.
As you can imagine, it gets very busy in the mornings as all the children are arriving at once and our priority has to be to ensure that every member of the class is safely in and settled ready for work. Therefore, it is often difficult for us to have anything other than the briefest of conversations at the door with parents. If you have a concern that you need to discuss fully, please would you make an appointment to speak to us after school, when we will be able to give you our full attention. If you have a concern that needs immediate attention please write a note in the home-school diary. You can also use the diary to record how your child has got on with their homework or reading. This book will also be used regularly to communicate with you throughout the year, so please make sure that your child has it in school every day.
Homework and Reading
In Year Six children take home a piece of homework every day, which is reinforcement, revision or extension of work that has been done in school. They will also be asked to complete work for ongoing independent projects. In addition to this homework your child should be reading at home every day. Books will be available through our reading groups, the selection of books in the classroom, and the school library.
PE and equipment
PE lessons will take place on Tuesday and Friday. Please make sure that your child’s PE kit is in school every day. It is usually best to bring it to school on Monday and leave it in the cloakroom until Friday. Please make sure that every item of your child’s PE kit, school uniform, water bottle and any other equipment is clearly named.
• White t-shirt
• Black shorts (tracksuit bottoms may be worn for outside PE or for religious reasons)
Please bring your child’s PE kit to school on Monday each week and leave it in the cloakroom until Friday. Please make sure all items of clothing are NAMED.
Details of the main areas to be covered in our topic are given on the attached sheet. You can help with our topic work by visiting the library, discussing our work and ensuring children complete homework tasks. We look forward to a great year. Please don’t forget we are here and available if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you for your support.
