Welcome to Year 2

Here are a few notes to let you know about life in Beech and Silver Birch Class:

This is a reminder of routines and procedures that will help your child to be ready and prepared for each day.

Class routines

The door to the classroom opens at 8:40 every morning. When your child arrives s/he will be encouraged to / be expected to change their reading books and sit down to do their journal work which will be written up on the board.

At the end of the day children will be dismissed from the bottom of the ramp, please wait well out of the way to avoid congestion.

School Uniform

• Red Abbotsbury jumper/cardigan (with logo)
• White polo shirt
• Black or grey trousers/skirt/pinafore dress
• Plain grey/red tights
• Plain grey/white/black socks
• Plain black shoes/trainers
• Water bottle

Please ensure that your child brings the following to school EVERYDAY:

1. Book bag
2. Water bottle
3. Home/school diary
4. Reading journal
5. Reading book

Water Bottle

The water bottle, clearly labelled with your child’s name, is kept in the classroom (a separate drink for packed lunch would be ideal). The children may bring juice for packed lunch but water only for the classroom please.

As you can imagine, it gets very busy in the mornings as all the children are arriving at once and our priority has to be to ensure that every member of the class is safely in and settled. Therefore, it is often difficult for us to have anything other than the briefest of conversations at the door with parents. If you have a concern that you need to discuss fully, please make an appointment to speak to your class teacher after school, when we will be able to give you our full attention. If you have a concern that needs immediate attention please write a note in the home-school diary. You can also use this book to record how your child has got on with their homework or reading. This book will also be used regularly by us to communicate with you throughout the year, so please make sure that your child has it in school every day.

Homework will be given at the beginning of each topic, which last 4 weeks. 3 or 4 pieces are expected to be handed in by the end of the topic.

In addition to this homework your child should be reading to someone at home every day. Each week your child will bring home: a guided reading book which they have read in a group at school, a graded reading book from an appropriate selection that they have chosen for themselves and a book from the book corner, which they will enjoy sharing with you, but may not be able to read alone. Please make sure that reading time is enjoyable at home and not a chore! Be positive and enjoy the books together.

School Lunch

Beech and Silver Birch Class must have the same lunch over the week so if they are school dinners on Monday, they must remain the same till the following Monday.

PE and equipment

PE lessons will take place twice a week.
Please make sure that your child’s PE kit is in school every day. PE kit is strictly black bottoms and a white top.  Please make sure that as the cold weather approaches, your child has warmer PE kit such as tracksuit bottoms and a warm jumper (NOT a school jumper!) to wear.  Within reason, regardless of the weather, children will be outside doing PE; it is up to you to make sure that your child’s PE kit is suitable for the weather. It is usually best to bring the kit to school on the first day of the half term and take them on the last day to wash. Please make sure that every item of your child’s PE kit, school uniform, water bottle and any other equipment is clearly named. It is nearly impossible to work out whose sweatshirt is whose in a class full of children!

PE kit

• White t-shirt
• Black shorts (tracksuit bottoms may be worn for
outside PE or for religious reasons)
• Plimsolls
• Black hoodie/jumper
