Welcome to Year 1
Here are a few notes to let you know about life in Cedar and Chestnut Class:
The door to the classroom opens at 8:40 every morning. When your child arrives s/he will be encouraged to put coats on their named pegs, put reading and homework folders into the reading and homework folder tray near the entrance and then put book bags into their named trays.
At the end of the day the children are encouraged to gather their belongings ie. new reading book, reading folder, book bag, coat and water bottle.
• Red Abbotsbury jumper/cardigan (with logo)
• White polo shirt
• Black or grey trousers/skirt/pinafore
• Plain grey/red/tights
• Plain grey/white/black socks
• Plain black shoes/trainers
• Water bottle
As you can imagine, it gets very busy in the mornings as all the children are arriving at once and our priority has to be to ensure that every member of the class is safely in and settled. Therefore, it is often difficult for us to have anything other than the briefest of conversations at the door with parents. If you have a concern that you need to discuss fully, please would you make an appointment to speak to me after school, when I will be able to give you my full attention. If you have a concern that needs immediate attention please write a note on in the diary.
Homework and Reading
In Year 1 children take home a Takeaway homework along with a skills pack. Children can choose to do 3 or 4 pieces from the Takeaway homework or the key skills pack. Please help and encourage your child with their homework, but let them be as independent as they can.
Each Friday one piece of work should be given to the class teacher to review and to help them to organise their time.
In addition to this homework your child should be reading to someone at home every day. Each day your child will bring home a coloured reading book from an appropriate selection that they have chosen for themselves which they will enjoy reading to you. Please make sure that reading time is enjoyable at home and not a chore! Be positive and enjoy the books together.
Cedar and Chestnut class must have the same lunch over the week so if they are school dinners on Monday, they must remain the same till the following Monday.
PE and equipment
PE lessons will take place twice a week. The days can be found on the doors of each classroom.
• White t-shirt
• Black shorts (tracksuit bottoms may be worn for
• outside PE or for religious reasons)
• Black hoodie/jumper
Please make sure that your child’s PE kit is in school every day. It is usually best to bring it to school on Monday and leave it in the cloakroom until Friday. Please make sure that every item of your child’s PE kit, school uniform, water bottle and any other equipment is clearly named. It is nearly impossible to work out whose sweatshirt is whose in a class full of children!
