Merton on the March Project
These children took part in the last leg of the March on Merton, where primary schools walked to each other to sing songs that remember the war. They collected our certificate on behalf of year 6.
The Wimbledon International Music Festival collaborated with the Merton Music Foundation on a new music education project, Merton on the March, which ran until March 2018.
The project was available to children from all 56 primary and special schools in the
borough of Merton, and took the form of a ‘musical relay’ of songs between schools.
It culminated in a huge, joint childrens’ march to the Mayor of Merton in March 2018.
Children aged between six and 11 from Merton Young Voices and Holy Trinity Primary
School, learnt new arrangements of three WWI songs by young composer
Adam Saunders, and gave premiere performances as part of the opening concert of
Wimbledon International Music Festival on 11 November.
The concert also featured the London premiere of an oratorio based on the war poems
of Robert Graves, alongside Sonoro choir and the Philharmonia Orchestra.
