Abbotsbury Primary School
At Abbotsbury we aim to establish a sporting culture that enables and encourages all children to play and enjoy sport. We have established a number of after-school clubs for our pupils offering a wide variety of sporting opportunities for our children. We enter numerous school sport competitions to allow children to be competitive and are constantly developing our PE programme.
We aim to:
1. Improve the quality of the school P.E. programme by:
• Auditing staff to highlight development areas
• Delivering P.E. focused staff training through staff meetings and
• INSET days
• Employment of sports specialist to teach pupils and mentor staff
2. Provide additional training and coaching for children to develop their
2. skills as part of our gifted and talented.
3. Enter teams into a wide range of school sport competitions.
4. Create inter-school sport competitions to provide further competitive
4. opportunities for children that have SEN.
5. Deliver an exciting and memorable sports day.
6. Increase punctuality and fitness of targeted children by employing two
6. staff members to run a “Monday Morning Fitness club”
7. Link a sports event with a charity scheme to support the wider world.
Primary School’s Sports Funding
What is the Sports Premium?
The Government has provided funding of £150 million per annum to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools in the country.
The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools. OFSTED will play a significant role in ensuring that schools target this funding in areas which will lead to clear outcomes in raising standards and opportunities in PE and school sport for all children throughout the Primary Phase. All schools will receive a lump sum of £8,000 plus a premium of £5 per pupil.
PE FUNDING STATEMENT 2016/2017

There is a strong culture of sports participation in Abbotsbury Primary School. Abbotsbury children are also reminded to be gracious both in victory and defeat, and to display sportsmanship in any competition and sporting event. The children are able to participate in a wide range of competitive sports including gymnastics, football, netball, Boccia, kwik cricket, tag rugby, athletics, rounders, sports hall athletics and tri golf. Over half of the fixtures and competitions that Abbotsbury have entered are through the MSSP. MSSP also provide the pathway to the London Youth Games- something our Netball team (borough champions) were able to experience this year. Any trophies, medals and certificates celebrating sporting participation and achievement, are presented in assemblies in front of the school to increase a sense of pride in the children’s accomplishments. Abbotsbury will also run the morning wake up and shake up club to improve the punctuality of children and to promote wider access to sporting participation. Linked to the increased sporting confidence in staff, a greater number of pupils have participated in extra – curricular activities as more clubs have been introduced. In 2015/2016 MSSP gave Abbotsbury a ‘Gold’ grade for our club participation and we are on course to achieving this again.
Our partnership with MSSP and work with the specialist coach has increased the confidence of the children and their self-esteem. Our staffs are also confident and enthusiastic towards delivering lessons and clubs, as our specialist PE teacher has worked with teachers within the school to ensure the quality of provision throughout the school. Mr Simpson has also trained up to 15 Year 5 pupils to become sport leaders. They assist him in running a lunchtime club catering to KS1 gifted and talented pupils.
Year 5 play leaders have led Multiskills events for Year 2 and Year 3 children. They have also taken the lead at Perseid school’s sports day. Our Year 5 Sport leaders will put their skills into practice as they help to run various events for the Key Stage One sports day- before competing themselves in the following week, at the David Weir Arena for the Key Stage 2 Sports day.
Class teachers have been on a variety of training to ensure quality provision at the appropriate age level. Our NQT has attended a PE inset run by the Sports Partnership and has been observed by the PE-Coordinator to make sure he develops his PE teaching and feels confident and comfortable with delivering quality PE. Get Set PE resources are available for all staff to use for planning and the delivery of high quality PE lessons. This was provided through MSSP.
As a result of the money the school invest in sport at Abbotsbury Primary School, children have the access to quality teaching, the opportunity to become young sport leaders, a wide range of experiences in both team and individual sports and opportunities to compete, with notable success, at borough level and beyond. We are delighted with the level of involvement in and enthusiasm for sport and PE at Abbotsbury.
